“They weren’t kidding,” Winnie said as she emerged from the car.

Jim looked over the top of the vehicle at her. “Who weren’t kidding about what?”

“My sisters told me there were a lot of trees,” Winnie said, scanning the area.

Jim raised his eyebrows. “It is a nature preserve.” He opened the tiny trunk and pulled out the cooler. “Come on,” he said. “Let’s go grab a table.” He led the way down a sandy path that wound its way through tall, dense tree coverage. “Watch out for roots,” Jim warned.

Considering that’s what had first been assumed had happened to Letty, that she’d tripped over a root and hit her head, Winnie was very aware of them.

“It’s beautiful,” she said. She felt like she had stepped into the middle of a jungle. Well, not a jungle, exactly, because there were pine needles strewn across the path, but the canopy was thick, casting the whole area in shadow.

“One of Sarasota’s hidden gems,” Jim remarked. He led the way to a clearing. “And if you like that, you’re going to like this view.” He turned to the left and led the way toward an open field.

Now that they weren’t on the narrow path, they walked side by side. “Close your eyes,” Jim said.

Winnie hesitated.

“Really,” Jim urged. “Close your eyes. I won’t let you fall.”

Winnie saw the sincerity on his face, swallowed hard, and did as he asked. He looped his arm through hers.

“It’s only a few steps,” he promised. “Nothing’s going to happen to you.”

She believed him. She felt safer with him than she could remember feeling in a long time, even though they’d only recently met.

He led her a few yards forward. “Okay,” he whispered. “Check it out.”

She opened her eyes, and blinked against the sun as a beautiful pond came into view. It was exactly as she’d sketched it.

“Wow,” she gasped as a trio of roseate spoonbills flew past, their pink wings stretched out against the blue sky.

“Okay.” Jim laughed. “That was just extra showing off because they’re not always here.” He pointed to a nearby covered picnic table. “Let’s eat.”

They sat on the same side of the table, their bodies almost touching on the bench so that they could both look out at the water.

“I’ve got egg salad, turkey, or a hummus wrap,” he said, flipping open the cooler.

“Quite the collection,” Winnie said.

He shrugged. “Turkey, if you’re a carnivore, egg salad if you’re a vegetarian, hummus if you’re a vegan.”

“Wow, you covered all your bases.”

He chuckled. “I tried to.”

They shared both the turkey and the egg salad, neither one of them really interested in the roasted red pepper hummus wrap.

“Letty hated trees,” Winnie found herself confiding.

Jim glanced over. “But this is where she was found, right?”

Winnie nodded. “It just doesn’t make sense that she would come here. I mean, it’s gorgeous, and I love it, but it’s just not her kind of place.”

“What do you think she was doing here?”

Winnie shrugged. “We don’t know.”

Jim remained silent, not offering an opinion. Winnie
